You are correct you can just replace the hard disk and start a new Time Machine backup. To be honest if the WD HD is more than 3 years old, I would just replace it with a new one. Someone technical can make an assessment of what the HD problem is by running diagnostic tests. While it can also make any bad sector (physical) errors not addressable, it may be a sign that the hard disk is starting to die, and you run the risk that more bad sectors to develop in the future. Reformatting the disk would fix any non physical errors. The current errors on the disk could be as a result of unplugging the disk while it was still writing data or other software errors, or it could be that the disk is starting to fail. I would recommend that reformatting a disk is done by someone that understands the process. Im just going to try and install the updated driver as suggested and hope I dont erase all the data at the same time. Ive just tried it on an old iBook G4 and its recognised it and mounted and unmounted it So its not the cord or the WD drive is it (Ive been running this drive fine for years with the previous OS versions).

I think WD has issued an update to their driver.īut the best thing to do is reformat the drive and install their software from your machine. My Passport Not Connecting Recover Dat Update To Their The Western Digital support boards report similar problems.

The first thing you should do with a new drive is reformat it using Disk Utility, to delete vendor proprietary crap. It probably shipped on the drive and you ran it when you bought the drive, either to provide formatting, security, or encryption.ĭisk vendors think they are adding value with that crap, because they can advertise special features like encryption.īut macOS already provides those things, so running that proprietary stuff is a big mistake.
